Tigers use pitching to sweep Pirates: Box score, game rewind - MLive.com

After two days of football-like scores, the Detroit Tigers finished the weekend by winning with pitching.

The Tigers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 Sunday afternoon to finish a three-game sweep at PNC Park.

The Tigers (8-5) had only four hits after scoring 28 runs over the last two games. The Pirates (3-13) managed only one run off Tigers’ starter Spencer Turnbull, who pitched seven innings.

Relievers Buck Farmer and Joe Jimenez pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

The Tigers scored their go-ahead run in the eighth, when Pirates reliever Richard Rodriguez hit Jonathan Schoop with a pitch, then launched a wild pitch well behind Miguel Cabrera when his spike caught on the dirt as he released the ball. Schoop advanced to second and scored on Cabrera’s RBI single.

This weekend marked the Tigers’ first road sweep since June 15-17, 2018, when the Tigers won three in a row in Chicago against the White Sox.

The Tigers return home for a three-game series against the White Sox beginning on Monday.

Sunday’s box score and game rewind are below.

GAME UPDATES

Bottom 9th: Tigers closer Joe Jimenez pitches a 1-2-3 ninth inning, finishing the game with two strikeouts as Detroit completes the sweep. Final: Tigers 2, Pirates 1.

Top 9th: Victor Reyes was hit by a pitch with two outs and was looking to steal second and get into scoring position, but Austin Romine struck out to end the inning. Tigers 2, Pirates 1.

Bottom 8th: Reliever Buck Farmer allows a two-out single and a walk, but manages to escape. The Tigers head to the ninth with a one-run lead. Tigers 2, Pirates 1.

Top 8th: The Tigers take the lead for the first time today in strange fashion. Reliever Richard Rodriguez hit Jonathan Schoop with a pitch and then unleashed a wild pitch that went about 30 feet behind Miguel Cabrera. That allowed Schoop to get into scoring position for Cabrera’s RBI single. Tigers 2, Pirates 1.

Bottom 7th: A nice finish to a nice afternoon for Spencer Turnbull, who retired the final seven batters he faced, including a 1-2-3 seventh inning. It’s the longest start of the year for Turnbull and the Tigers. Tigers 1, Pirates 1.

Top 7th: Pirates reliever Nik Turley issued a two-out walk to Victor Reyes, but the inning ended on deep flyout to center by Austin Romine. Tigers 1, Pirates 1.

Bottom 6th: Spencer Turnbull makes his case for pitching the seventh by tossing a quick 1-2-3 frame, getting Bryan Reynolds to strike out between two groundouts. Tigers 1, Pirates 1.

Top 6th: New Pirates pitcher Geoff Hartlieb struck out the first two batters he faced, Jonathan Schoop and Miguel Cabrera, in a perfect 1-2-3 frame. Tigers 1, Pirates 1.

Bottom 5th: Kevin Newman hit a two-out double, but Spencer Turnbull got Josh Bell to ground out to end the fifth. Tigers 1, Pirates 1.

Top 5th: Nice job by the Tigers to answer back immediately. Victor Reyes doubled against the wall and came home to score on Austin Romine’s single. Romine has two of the Tigers’ three hits so far this afternoon. Tigers 1, Pirates 1.

Bottom 4th: The Pirates get on the board first. Spencer Turnbull hit Colin Moran with a pitch to lead off the inning. Erik Gonzalez lined a rocket at second baseman Jonathan Schoop that he was unable to handle, scoring Moran. It was ruled a base hit. Pirates 1, Tigers 0.

Top 4th: It’s been a sluggish Sunday for the Tigers’ offense. Chris Stratton strikes out C.J. Cron and Jeimer Candelario to retire the side in order. Tigers 0, Pirates 0.

Bottom 3rd: Turnbull pitched into and out of trouble in the third, giving up a lead-up walk to the No. 9 hitter, catcher John Ryan Murphy, and then a single to Adam Frazier. But a double play and a fly-out quickly ended the threat. Tigers 0, Pirates 0.

Top 3rd: The Tigers stranded Austin Romine at second base after a lead-off double. New Pirates pitcher Chris Stratton struck out JaCoby Jones, Niko Goodrum and Jonathan Schoop to escape the inning. Jones tweaked a muscle in his abdomen and was replaced by Harold Castro in center field to start the bottom of the inning. The Tigers said he is day-to-day. Tigers 0, Pirates 0.

Bottom 2nd: After Spencer Turnbull’s lax attention to a baserunner resulted in a stolen base in the first, the problem was corrected in the second frame. Catcher Austin Romine gunned down Erik Gonzalez at second base and Turnbull faced the minimum. Tigers 0, Pirates 0.

Top 2nd: Steven Brault loses it for a couple of batters -- walking Jeimer Candelario and then hitting Christin Stewart in the ribs -- but he shakes it off to get Victor Reyes to ground into a double play to end the inning. Tigers 0, Pirates 0.

Bottom 1st: Pirates lead-off man Adam Frazier got an infield hit and then stole second against Tigers starter Spencer Turnbull. Turnbull issued a walk to Colin Moran but came back to get Bryan Reynolds swinging on a high fastball. Tigers 0, Pirates 0.

Top 1st: One day after the Tigers scored five in the first, they went 1-2-3 on Saturday, with Steven Brault getting Miguel Cabrera looking to end the inning. Tigers 0, Pirates 0.
