DETROIT -- This game packed a lot into seven innings.
Detroit Tigers reliever Tyler Alexander struck out nine consecutive batters and the Tigers took advantage of a three-run error by former outfielder Nick Castellanos before falling to the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader.
The second game should begin about 5:25 p.m. Both games will only be seven innings, the first time since 1912 that a doubleheader has featured two game of less than nine innings.
Tigers starter Rony Garcia gave up two home runs to Castellanos before giving way to Alexander in the third.
Alexander proceeded to strike out the first nine batters he faced -- the entirety of the Reds lineup -- before hitting Mike Moustakas with a 1-2 pitch to end the streak.
The Tigers (5-4) were almost completely shut down by Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani, who allowed just three hits over five scoreless innings.
But the Tigers broke out in the sixth when Miguel Cabrera, C.J. Cron and Christin Stewart reached base with two outs. Victor Reyes sent a towering fly to deep right-center. Castellanos ran a long way to track it down but ended up dropping the ball. Three runs scored, but Reyes was stranded at third after a confusing sequence in which it briefly appeared that he had been balked home. (Home plate umpire Larry Vanover was actually just calling timeout).
The Reds (3-5) answered back of the seventh against reliever Joe Jimenez to score the decisive run.
