Red Sox vs. Yankees score, takeaways: Injury replacements put New York on verge of sweeping Boston - CBS sports.com

Sunday night at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees continued their recent dominance of the rival Boston Red Sox (NYY 4, BOS 2). The Yankees are a perfect 6-0 against the Red Sox this season and Boston has dropped their last seven games overall.

Despite being without DJ LeMahieu (thumb), Aaron Judge (calf), and Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring), the Yankees tagged Red Sox starter Chris Mazza for four runs on eight hits in three innings. J.A. Happ, who might've been pitching for his rotation spot Sunday night, held the Red Sox to one run in 5 2/3 innings. It was his best start of the season.

The Yankees and Red Sox will wrap up this four-game series Monday night. Here are three takeaways from Sunday's game.

The Yankees have been unbeatable at Yankee Stadium

Sunday's win improved the Yankees to 9-1 at home this season and the one loss was a "home" game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Yankees are 9-0 at Yankee Stadium and have outscored their opponents 65-32 those nine games. Here are the longest unbeaten streaks at Yankee Stadium to begin a season in franchise history:

The Yankees lost their first three home series last season (to the Orioles, Tigers, and White Sox no less), and, since then, they are 24-0-3 in 27 home series. That's the longest unbeaten home series streak in team history.

Furthermore, the Yankees have won 10 straight games and 14 of their last 15 games against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium dating back to last season. The Red Sox are 4-21 at Yankee Stadium since 2017. 4-21! That's hard to believe.

The Red Sox fell behind early again

It's no secret pitching has been a major issue for the Red Sox this season. They took an MLB worst 6.10 ERA into Sunday's game. The Yankees scored one run in the first inning and one run in the second inning Sunday, and it was the 15th time in 22 games Boston allowed at least two runs in the first two innings.

Here are the Red Sox's numbers heading into Sunday:

  • Innings 1-3: 7.14 ERA
  • Innings 4-6: 5.71 ERA
  • Innings 7-9: 5.37 ERA

Bad at all times, no doubt, but especially early. The Red Sox constantly play from behind and not only is it difficult to win that way, it's demoralizing. When you're struggling and the other team is putting up early runs every game, that "here we go again" feeling can sink in real quick.

On the bright side, the Red Sox did not allow eight runs Sunday. It was the first time they managed to do that since last Sunday, seven games ago.

Yankees backups still coming up big

The Yankees placed a record 30 different players on the injured list last season, yet they still won 103 games and the AL East title because their depth is almost obnoxious. Their internal replacement level is so high.

Within the last eight days the Yankees have lost their three best hitters to injury (LeMahieu, Judge, Stanton) and it hasn't mattered. Their replacements have been great. Clint Frazier was a triple short of the cycle twice in the last week and fourth outfielder Mike Tauchman took a 144 OPS+ into Sunday.

Tauchman went 2 for 4 as the No. 3 hitter Sunday night. Mike Ford, the team's backup first baseman, has seen more at-bats since Stanton got hurt, and Sunday he went 2 for 4 with an RBI single to open the scoring and a two-run home run to provide insurance later on.

Ford, Frazier, and Tauchman went a combined 5 for 12 with three runs driven in Sunday night. Once again, the Yankees are without several key players because of injury, and once again, their replacements have stepped in and picked up the slack. It is the epitome of the "next man up" mentality.
