Normally, the Daytona International Speedway would host the 24 Hours of Daytona for the Rolex Sports Car Series in late January on its infield road course as a psuedo-introduction into Speedweeks before the NASCAR season would begin.
Now, the Daytona Road Course is center stage in the NASCAR schedule with just three weeks left in the Cup Series regular season.
Road course races have generally been considered "wild card" races, where someone not usually in contention each week can sneak a potential victory. That may not be the case as it was in the early 2010s, when A.J. Allmendinger and Marcos Ambrose contended at Watkins Glen and Sonoma on an annual basis. Those two are no longer on the circuit, and drivers like Chase Elliott and Martin Truex Jr. have taken to the right and left-hand turns on road courses.
CHANGES IN THE 20 CAR: Christopher Bell returning to Joe Gibbs Racing, replacing Erik Jones
This will be the first Cup Series road course race of the season; by this time in a normal Cup Series schedule, the series would have already raced at Watkins Glen and Sonoma. Both of those tracks lost this season's race dates after the COVID-19 pandemic shook up the schedule.
Here's a look at this weekend's race schedule in Daytona:
