General elections called in Bermuda - Prensa Latina

22 de agosto de 2020, 11:4Hamilton, Aug 22 (Prensa Latina) Bermuda today began the race for a new electoral contest to be held on October 1, announced Prime Minister David Burt.

For the president, the holding of general elections will allow the country to dedicate its efforts to rebuilding the economy and creating greater opportunities for the population.

Burt took over as head of government in 2017, when his Progressive Labor Party won a sweeping victory at the polls.

That result granted that political force 24 of the 36 seats in parliament, while the One Bermuda Alliance, the main opposition party, won the remaining 12 seats.

By announcing the early return to the polls, the prime minister rejected the idea of holding the partial consultations planned until the end of the current period that ends in 2022.

It is wise to call general elections that will allow the future administration to focus directly on economic recovery and make the tough decisions that lie ahead, Burt said.

In this way, Bermuda joins the series of elections held this year in the Caribbean region: Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Suriname and Saint Kitts and Nevis, and those scheduled in the coming months in Jamaica and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
