Bermuda remained in 168th position in the latest Fifa world rankings, which were released yesterday.
Bermuda’s most significant accomplishments included their qualification for the Gold Cup in July, during which Bermuda picked up their first win, a 2-0 victory over Nicaragua in Harrison, New Jersey, as well as their appearance in League A of the Concacaf Nations League.
Kyle Lightbourne’s side punched well above their weight in that competition, picking up a valuable 2-0 win in Panama, having lost the reverse fixture 4-1 at National Sports Center, as well as suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 away at Mexico, the top ranked nation in Concacaf, in Toluca.
As a result of the defeat, where they conceded a 94th-minute winner to Uriel Antuna, Bermuda were relegated to League B for the next Nations League cycle, which will begin in September.
Before then, Bermuda’s attention will be on qualification for the 2021 Gold Cup. The draw, which was made in Miami, saw Bermuda receive a bye from the first round in March, which will be contested between teams from Leagues B and C of the Nations League. Bermuda will await the winner of the match up between Bahamas and French Guiana, in June 2020. The winner of that second round match will qualify for the 2021 Gold Cup.
The Bermuda Football Association plans to schedule a series of friendly internationals in preparation for the qualifiers in June.
