Bermuda is ringing in the new year with traditional celebrations across the island this evening.

Bars, clubs and hotels from St George’s to Dockyard are hosting parties and live music events to welcome 2019 in style.

In the East End, crowds have gathered in Kings Square, where live music has been performed for most of the evening — and where the annual onion drop will mark midnight.

Kris Darrell said her family recently moved to the area, and she was happy to soak in the sights and festive atmosphere.

Ms Darrell said: “It’s not my first time in St George’s for New Year’s, but it is my first in a long time.

“I like the history, the community. It’s a close-knit community, and I think you feel it up here more than most places.”

Peter White said he and his family decided to go to St George’s because they wanted a family friendly celebration.

He said: “This is going to be the first time we let our daughter stay up until midnight, and this seemed like a fun option.

“She’s already a bit exhausted. I’m not sure she’s going to make it until the actual onion drop.”

Kenneth Bascome, former mayor, said he was happy to see people enjoying themselves, but had hoped to see larger crowds.

He said: “I’m hopeful that it will pick up a bit more.

“I just hope that everyone enjoys themselves and rings in the New Year in a safe and peaceful manner.”
